Want to know how to build websites easier without spending another 250 bucks for a DVD set you’ve seen on TV? I know you’re smiling right now, because you have probably said to yourself, “I just don’t want to spend another 250 bucks on this DVD”, but I sure would like to know the information that is in that DVD they make so appealing.
You see, I’ve been there. Many times I went online searching for a way of how I can build a website. I didn’t know anything about html editor or how a website is going to be put online, or web hosting etc. There is a lot of information out there of how to build a free website, but usually there are always strings attached.
Most people who want to make money online want to have a web site of their own, but they don’t want to learn HTML. Who does? Online marketing always interested me, so I began searching for a way to create my own website without being dependent on somebody else. Does this sound familiar?
Here is just a short list of what you will need to create and how to build a website easier:
· Domain Name
You should be able to purchase a domain name for about 10 bucks.
· Hosting Account
Once you have activated your hosting account, it usually takes between 24-48 hours before your hosting account is ready for you to upload your web site.
· FTP ( File Transfer Protocol)
Each hosting account comes with an FTP which is basically a directory (folder) on the Web Server where your Web Pages reside.
· HTML Editor
There are a lot of html editors you be able to down load for free and I’ve found one which is easy to work with.
· DNS (domain name server)
You will have to go to your domain registration account and assign the domain name servers (DNS) for your new hosting account.
Now you are going to ask yourself, how am I getting more information and support in case I’m getting stuck and need more help about how to build own website.
One place I can recommend is forums. Check out many different ones and you’ll be surprised of how much help and support you can get.
Let’s expand on building your website.
You’ve got everything lined up and ready to go. The biggest hurdle of getting started is knowing of what to do next.
The first thing you need to do is go to your registrar’s web site to change the name server.
For the sake of keeping it simple and you’ve purchased your domain name from go-daddy and want to keep go-daddy as your hosting account you won’t have to change anything.
The first thing you do is open your desktop and start your html editor. The one I’m using is Kompozer.
Click on the Kompozer Icon and the html editor will open. Note the menu at the top of the window, and the various Instructions. ( File, Edit, Insert, etc.)
Now you will give your web page a name. The name of every web page appears at the top left hand side of the screen in that bleu colored bar that every web site has. This blue bar is known as the ‘title bar’.
The title bar is one of the most important factors in achieving high search engine rankings.
Next, you are going to create the text to go into your title bar.
Click on ‘Format’ in the dropdown menu that appears, click on Page Title and Properties. In the Title, you will put how you want your website to be described, and then click ‘ok’.
You just named your first web page. Every time you create a page don’t forget to ‘name’ it.
Always make sure to saving the Files correctly which is very important. Many people make the mistake of saving their documents incorrectly.
Depending on which computer you are working on at the bottom of the screen you will see ‘File Name’ and save as ‘type’. It may say whatever you named the website.html instead of xhtml. This makes no difference, either one will work fine. Html or xhtml is the language that computers work in.
Every main page on a website is called a Home Page and is saved as index.html. It may seem to be a bit confusing at first but only because this is new to you.
You may want to go back into the Kompozer and polish your site, add images, or change colour of the font or page. Now you are almost there and ready to publish your first web site.
As I mentioned earlier when you signed up with your hosting company, you would have received an e-mail with lots of information. Read this e-mail very carefully and follow the instructions. Amongst the details will be something known as your FTP ( File Transfer Protocol ) address. FTP is used for the transferring your pages from your computer to your web hosts computer.
As you have followed the instructions from your e-mail correctly, your web page should be online.
You can see it is not necessary to spend a lot of money to creating your own web page. All it takes is a little determination and a willingness to spend a little time practicing. Before you know it, you’ll be an expert of how to build websites easier.
